LeadUp ReStart – A New Chapter for Young Street Mothers in Lagos
In the heart of Lagos, young street mothers struggle daily juggling survival with motherhood under impossible odds. Some work as bus conductors. Others sell water, eggs, or offer basic services in motor parks where they also sleep. Most were pushed out of their homes due to the death of a parent, domestic abuse, or early pregnancy. They earn barely ₦3,000 daily hardly enough to feed themselves or their children. Education and stability feel out of reach.
LeadUp ReStart is our response. In January 2025, we launched this pilot initiative to reintegrate these young women into society through access to education, livelihoods, and digital inclusion.
From a survey of over 20 street mothers, three were selected for targeted intervention. With support from philanthropists, friends, and partners, we are helping them pursue their dreams whether it’s returning to school, learning a trade, or building a better life for their children.
Meet Yetunde “She’s a fashion designer by passion. But today, she sells satchet water in one of the park. We are here to change that story.”
